FRESCO PLASTER SPECIFICATIONS

PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
- This Section includes the following:
- Fresco plaster system.
- Related Sections include the following:
- Division 4 Section “Unit Masonry Assemblies” for masonry substrates for fresco plaster assemblies.
- Division 6 Section “Rough/Miscellaneous Carpentry” for wood framing for fresco plaster assemblies.
- Division 9 Section “Gypsum Board Assemblies” for gypsum board substrates, framing and other components of fresco plaster assemblies.
- Division 9 Section “Painting” for primers for fresco plaster.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: For each type of product indicated.
- Samples: Three, 12-inch by 12-inch finished samples of fresco plaster on rigid backing.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Installer Qualifications: Use only a trained installer employed by the manufacturer, who has completed fresco installations similar to those indicated for this Project and whose work has resulted in successful in-service performance for a minimum of 3 years.
- Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide fresco plaster systems with the following surface-burning characteristics as determined by testing identical products per ASTM E 84 by UL or another testing and inspecting agency.
- lame Spread: 25 or less.
- Smoke Developed: 450 or less.
- Mockups (if applicable): Before plastering, install mockups at project site of at least 100 sq. ft. in surface area to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution.
- Obtain Architect’s written approval of mockup before starting fresco plaster installation.
1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
- Deliver materials in original packages, containers, or bundles bearing brand name and identification of manufacturer or supplier.
- Store materials inside at room temperature, as close to installation conditions as possible. Protect against damage from weather, direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, surface contamination, and other causes.
1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS
- Room Temperatures: Maintain not less than 45 deg F or more than 95 deg F for 7 days before application of fresco plaster, continuously during application, and after application until fresco plaster is dry.
- Lighting: Maintain a minimum 60 foot-candle illumination of work surfaced by either permanent or temporary lighting during duration of fresco plaster application.
- Avoid conditions that result in fresco plaster drying too rapidly.
- Distribute heat evenly; prevent concentrated or uneven heat on fresco plaster.
- Maintain relative humidity levels for prevailing ambient temperature that produces normal drying conditions.
- Ventilate building spaces in a manner that prevents drafts of air from contacting surfaces during fresco plaster application and until it is dry.
1.6 WARRANTY
- Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to replace fresco plaster that does not comply with requirements or that fails within specified warranty period. Warranty does not include deterioration or failure of fresco plaster due to unusual traffic, failure of substrate, vandalism, abuse, or seismic movements for a period of ten years from date of Substantial Completion. Warranty is contingent upon payment in full for work completed under contract.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
- Manufacturer: Provide products by NÄSS Fresco Finishes, 200 Opatrny Drive, Fox River Grove, IL 60021, (847) 639-1484.
- Substitutions are not allowed.
2.2 FRESCO PLASTER
- Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following:
- NÄSS Fresco Finishes
- Fresco Classico Single Color
- Fresco Classico Two Color Blend
- Fresco Naturale
- Fresco Parma
- Fresco Costa
- Fresco Giotto
- Fresco Plaster: Provide seamless, without pattern, proprietary, two-coat, portland cement based fresco plaster system designed to be a washable, durable, flexible finish to withstand cracking and to comply with the following requirements:
- Base Coat Color
- Overlay Coat Color (if applicable)
- Treatment (if applicable)
- Lustrous
- Brillante
- Metallico
- Treatment Color (if applicable)
- Protective Finish: provide protective finish, where applicable, as directed by manufacturer.
2.3 PLASTER MIXES
- Base Coat: Mechanically mix proportions of base coat material, cement plaster, and colorant as required to achieve integrally colored substrate and to comply with fresco plaster manufacturer's written recommendations.
- Overlay Coat: Mechanically mix proportions of overlay coat material, cement plaster, and colorant as required to achieve integrally colored finish surface and to comply with fresco plaster manufacturer's written recommendations.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
- Examine areas and substrates, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements and other conditions affecting performance. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
- Verify gypsum board substrates have received a minimum GA-214-M-97 Level 4 finish, if applicable (FRESCO CLASSICO SINGLE COLOR, FRESCO CLASSICO TWO COLOR BLEND, FRESCO NATURALE, FRESCO PARMA, AND FRESCO COSTA).
- Verify gypsum board substrates have received a minimum GA-214-M-97 Level 5 finish, if applicable (FRESCO GIOTTO).
- Verify substrates have received latex based primer, work performed by others. Primer to have been rolled, not sprayed, and can contain no orange peel, runs, or other foreign objects.
3.2 FRESCO PLASTERING
- Fresco Plaster Application: Comply with fresco plaster manufacturer's written recommendations. Prior to beginning installation, protect adjacent areas. Wet trowel by hand in different directions with varying degrees of pressure to achieve a fresco appearance. Trowel smooth as required to match samples approved by Architect.
- Concealed Surfaces: Omit fresco plaster in areas where plaster will be concealed from view in the completed Work.
- Repair: Repair damaged fresco plaster in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
